Barbican

Strangely, despite being a Londoner, I’ve spent very little time at the Barbican - a few visits to the Barbican Centre for concerts and the theatre, or getting totally lost in its meandering walkways back in the ‘80s. Built from the mid 1960s into the 1970s the estate and Centre are located on the City of London’s northern edge in Cripplegate. The City suffered serious damage during WW2 and Cripplegate Ward was more or less demolished with less than 10% of the City’s population living there in the early 1950s. To bring back people to the City the plan to build the Barbican Estate on a 35 acre bomb site was drawn up. The estate was not designed for social housing however, unlike other new estates around the City, but was intended for City professionals and international business people. However it was owned by the Corporation of the City of London and subsequently, due to the right to buy, many properties in the estate are now in private ownership. The site accommodates around 4,000 people and due to the nature of its Brutalist architecture has been Grade II listed.
